Introduced by Karl Sprenger of Messrs Dammann et Cie, Italy, Canna (Balisier) ‘Atalanta’ is a medium sized Italian Group cultivar; mid green foliage, ovoid shaped, acute apex, maroon margin, branching habit; clusters of flowers are open, carmine tinged with red-orange, staminodes are large, edges lightly frilled, petals green, fully self-cleaning, low bloomer, flowers in late summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; seed is sterile, pollen is low fertile; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured pink and purple; tillering is slow.
