Introduced by Antoine Wintzer of The Conard & Jones Co., West Grove, Pennsylvania, USA in 1902, Canna (Balisier) ‘American Flag’ is a tall Italian Group cultivar; green foliage, elliptical shaped, acute apex, maroon margin, upright habit; oval main stems, coloured purple; flowers are open, self-coloured orange-red, throat yellow, staminodes are large, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, blooms open in the early morning; seed is sterile, pollen is low fertile; rhizomes are long and thin, coloured white and pink; tillering is average.
