Introduced by Vilmorin-Andrieux et Cie, Nurserymen, France in 1930, Canna (Balisier) ‘Roi Soleil’ is a medium sized Crozy Group cultivar; green foliage, branching habit; spikes of flowers are open, self-coloured cardinal-red, throat cardinal-red with gold spots, staminodes are medium size, edges irregular, petals purple with farina, fully self-cleaning, flowers in late summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured purple; tillering is average.
