Introduced by Wilhelm Pfitzer Nursery, Germany in 1906, Canna (Balisier) ‘R. Wallace’ is a small Crozy Group cultivar; green foliage, oblong shaped, acute apex, white margin, branching habit; round main stems, coloured green; flowers are open, pale yellow with rose spots, staminodes are large, edges regular, stamen is rose-red with small yellow flecks, petals yellow, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, flowers in summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white and pink; tillering is average.

Canna ‘R. Wallace’ is available from specialist growers; breeding is RHS Award of Merit 1907.

Since the early 1990’s many nurserymen have confused this fine heritage cultivar with the Italian Group cultivar C. ‘Austria’. Prior to this the catalogues show that the correct plant was being sold under this name. There can be no doubt that this Pfitzer bred cultivar is a Crozy Group cultivar. The only similarity is the colours of the foliage and flowers. The shapes and style are very different, and this confusion would not have occurred if elementary research had been undertaken.Thor Dalebø
