Introduced by Pierre Antoine Marie Crozy of Crozy et fil, Lyon , France in 1889, Canna (Balisier) ‘Madame Crozy’ is a small Crozy Group cultivar; green foliage, ovoid shaped, acute apex, white margin, branching habit; oval main stems, coloured green; spikes of flowers are open, scarlet with a narrow gold margin, throat scarlet, staminodes are medium size, edges regular, petals red, fully self-cleaning, outstanding bloomer, flowers in summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white and purple; tillering is prolific.

Canna ‘Madame Crozy’was awarded RHS Award of Merit in 1890; is available from specialist growers.

This is the most influental canna of all time. As well as being a breakthrough in flower size that was a sensation at that time, this cultivar was used as the seed parent of the Italian Group of cannas.Thor Dalebø
