Regal Red’ is a medium sized species; dark green foliage, large, oblong shaped, maroon margin, branching habit; oval main stems, coloured green; triangular flower stalks, coloured green; spikes of flowers are erect, self-coloured red, staminodes are long and narrow, edges regular, petals red, fully self-cleaning, flowers in summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured purple; tillering is prolific.
