Botany is the scientific study of the physiology, structure, genetics, ecology, distribution, classification, and economic importance of plants.
The origin of the word botany came from the Greek word botane, which means “grass” or “pasture.” Since the original meaning focused on the idea of a pasture, it’s possible the study of botany came about from herdsmen needing to know what plants were safe for their herds to eat.
Carl Linnaeus
Born in 1707 in Råshult, Sweden, Carl Linnaeus was a botanist, physician and zoologist. He is known as the father of modern taxonomy, and is also considered one of the fathers of modern ecology.
Nobuyuki Tanaka
Nobuyuki Tanaka (田中 伸幸, Tanaka Nobuyuki) is an economic botanist at the Tokyo Metropolitan University, the Makino Botanical Garden in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan.
Tanaka is an expert on the family Cannaceae, and in 2001 published a revision of the family Cannaceae in the New World and Asia.
